MT43News School Reporter (and volleyball player) Bryleigh Erickson provided these volleyball terms for those unfamiliar with volleball:

Volleyball Terms Directory

I know that some people don’t know much about volleyball, so I am going to explain some terms that many people might not know. These are mostly words used when I am reporting the stats after the game.

An ace is a serve that lands on the opposing team’s court without being touched or is touched once but cannot be kept in play. This results in a point for the serving team.

A dig can be described as a defensive action in volleyball where a player prevents the ball from hitting the ground after an opponent’s attack.
A kill occurs when a player spikes or hits the ball into the opponent’s court, resulting in a point for their team. This can also happen if a player tips the ball over and the ball hits the ground.

An assist occurs when a player sets or passes the ball to another player that directly leads to a kill. This is generally the second contact in a rally and sets up an attacker to get a kill.

A block is a defensive movement where a player near the net jumps to try to block an attacker’s hit. They reach their hands above the net to intercept, stop or redirect the opponent’s attack.

How does the game work?

Varsity plays best of 5 sets. They play until one team has won three of five sets. The first four sets are played to 25 points and the fifth set, if needed, is played to 15 points.  C Squad and Junior Varsity games are also played best of 5 sets, but they only play the first two sets to 25 points and the last three are to 15 points
