Broadwater High School graduation ceremony last Sunday was full of laughter, hoots, hollers, and side jokes, but also the sadness of saying goodbye to classmates, teachers and the comforts of small-town America. Then graduates took their honors in stride.
Of the 38 graduates, nearly half won scholarships or apprenticeships valued at $619,000. Many of those graduates had accumulated 15 or more college credits as well. According to High School Principal Sheri Heavrin, those college credits would amount to savings of $280,000 in college tuition for the graduates. Twenty-one county and private organizations were listed as scholarship contributors.
Four graduates will go into the armed services: Trace Giomi, Jacob Rainey, Gavin Schmele and Noah Borror.
Student Kaitlyn Noyes presented the Point of Light Award to Business Teacher and Coach Joe Horne. She commended him for his influence and encouragement in his motivational speeches.
Co-Valedictorian and Salutatorians, Lexi Davies, Kaitlyn Noyes and Ashley Sanderson, team-tagged to talk to their class about the lessons they have learned in the last 13 years in school, including taking the last step by graduating, making the decision to keep going no matter the odds, and believing in themselves.
Keynote Speaker Jason Thomas began on a light note, reciting anecdotes from the class’s younger years, but dove into the characteristics of the groups, including their leadership and organizational abilities - whether it be a pizza potluck or building a civic lesson around a vote for an induction of donuts in class. Thomas, a new biology and science teacher, ended on a somber note: “This is a time of immense freedom for you. Make sure you make choices for better outcomes in your life; make sure your choices are not accidental, but intentional. Most of all, stay connected to this, your community of classmates and friends. They will last you a lifetime.”
