Contests have a long history in the 4-H program and are a fun way for 4-H members to receive recognition, learn new skills and build confidence. This year, the 4-H County Contest Extravaganza took place on Sunday, March 15th at the Methodist Church and Broadwater High School.
Kicking off the afternoon was the Communications Contest. This was formerly known as the Speech and Demonstration Contest but has expanded to several different categories. There was an outstanding turnout for this contest with 13 entries.
In the senior division, Kaitlyn Noyes participated in Career Communications where she is expected to complete a job application, cover letter, resume and job interview. She received a purple ribbon and the overall prize.
Senior member Abigail McCauley participated in three different presentations, including one prepared speech and two illustrated talks. She received two purple ribbons and one blue.
Addy Mosher also had multiple entries with an illustrated talk and an impromptu speech and received blue ribbons in both.
Rounding out the seniors was Rigoberto Delgado with a red ribbon for his illustrated talk. Seniors who receive a purple or blue ribbon are eligible to attend Montana 4-H Congress in the event.
Moving on to the junior division of the Communications Contest, Calvin McCauley took the overall prize and a purple ribbon with his illustrated talk on cow identification. Also receiving a purple ribbon for his illustrated talk was Evan McCauley. Blue ribbon illustrated talks were Jasen Rose, Magdalena Delgado and Ryal Lancello. There was one entry in the video category, Madison Cederberg, who received a blue ribbon as well.
Next was the Hooked-on Cooking Contest where members, ages 8-13, cook and develop skills for a safe, nutritious and proper presentation of food. This contest also received a substantial increase in entries with five individuals or teams. The theme this year was “Happy 250th Birthday America!” Some participants incorporated the theme into their dish, while others decorated a baked item related to the theme. They could participate individually or with a partner.
The overall winner for Hooked on Cooking, receiving a purple ribbon, was Hannah Chavez with her berry-filled cupcakes. Purple ribbons also went to the team of Grace McLaughlin and Magdalena Delgado, who cooked a whole picnic spread, and Kaylee Cederberg for her taco dish. Blue ribbons were awarded to a team of Grace Christensen and Ella Kosto. Josie Frazier received a red ribbon for her patriot parfait.
Cloverbuds, who are members aged 5 to 8 years old, were able to participate in an educational activity. The number of Cloverbuds participating more than doubled compared to last year. The participants were Oliver Delgado, Clyde Frazier, Abigail Lancello, Ryann Mace, Cody Martin, Molly McLaughlin, Talon Romo, Ellie Rose, Colton Schaffer, Liam Simon and Amelia Six.
After the contests, participants played games, were recognized and received ribbons. Congratulations to all of the participants on a wonderful day! THANK YOU to all of the 4-H leaders, parents and judges who helped with the event! We couldn’t have done it without you!
