Our middle school runners had a busy week with a meet in Montana City on Tuesday and then joining their “bigs” at Mountain West on Saturday. Terrain of the course plays a crucial role in cross-country and there is no better example than Montana City’s one-and-a-half-mile loop.
Ladies were first and showed their strength powering up those hills. Kathryn Six (11:54) finished sixth among eighth graders, Kaylee Flynn (13:07) fourth among sixth graders, and Abygail Osborne (14:45) sixth among seventh graders. Kensley Sangray (13:39), Lydia Brakefield (14:02), Harper Hazlett (14:24), Anna Buscher (16:15), Courtney Webber (16:21), Sky Sellay (16:38).
Our boys are all sixth graders and two of them earned awards! Carter Christensen brought home the first-place medal for sixth graders with a time of 11:10, with Jacob Hildreth not far behind at 11:30 in fourth place. Calvin McCauley (12:12), Bennet Kirksey (16:38) and Liam Easter (17:41) rounded out the team.
Next up was Mountain West running right after the Varsity races. The course was shortened from 3.1 miles for the high school contest to 1.3 miles for the 446 Middle School Boys. Carter Christiansen (9:01)) led the way in 84th with Calvin McCauley (10:01) in 175th, Bennett Kirksey (12:47) in 360th and Liam Easter (13:20) in 380th.
The Middle School Girls field of 432 runners was the last race of the day. Kathryn Six (9:24) was 44th; an improvement of almost sixty places from last year! The rest of the girls team all showed improvement this year: 134th Lydia Brakefield (10:45), 160th Kensley Sangray (10:59), 167th Harper Hazlett (11:03), 215th Abygail Osborne (11:34) and 304th Anna Busscher (12:54). The Townsend girls placed 18th as a team with 510 points.
The Middle Schoolers will continue their season with races in Clancy on September 29th and October 3rd in Boulder. These are both afternoon races in beautiful locations, so come join the fun.
