Author: Jessica Erickson -
Article Published: // Volume: Edition: Each fall, the Broadwater County community begins to see advertisements for a long-standing Broadwater High School tradition—the annual Senior Steak Fry and Silent Auction. This year’s event will be held Friday, October 23rd, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at the Townsend Elementary School cafeteria, prior to the senior night football game.
Community members are invited to enjoy a delicious New York steak dinner, complete with a roll, salad, baked potato, ice cream, and a drink. Dine in or take your meal to go!
The Senior Steak Fry and Silent Auction has been a cherished tradition for many years. The event is organized and operated by the senior class and their parents as a fundraiser to help cover the many expenses associated with senior year and graduation. Proceeds help fund the senior banquet held in May, senior banners displayed on the light posts along Main Street, decorations and supplies for the graduation ceremony, and the seniors’ all-night graduation celebration.
Funds are raised through dinner ticket sales as well as donations of goods and services for the Silent Auction. The generosity of local businesses, organizations, families, and community members plays an important role in making these activities possible for the graduating class.
A Safe and Memorable Graduation Celebration
The all-night graduation celebration is one of the most anticipated traditions of senior year. The event provides graduates with a safe and memorable opportunity to spend one final evening together before beginning the next chapter of their lives.
The tradition began as a way to give graduating seniors a fun and safe alternative for celebrating graduation night. The event is organized by senior class parents, with input from the students about activities they would enjoy.
Following graduation, the seniors typically return to the school in the evening before boarding a bus for an evening adventure. Past itineraries have included dinner out, a movie, bowling, and trips to the hot springs. After their evening outing, the group returns to the school, where they remain together for the rest of the night.
There is no shortage of activities to keep the graduates entertained. Inflatables are set up in the gym, along with active games such as pickleball and cornhole. In past years, the students have even enjoyed a laser tag course. For those looking for something a little more relaxed, there are board games, card games, and movies. And, of course, students are welcome to bring a sleeping bag if they decide they need to catch a few hours of sleep!
Plenty of snacks and drinks are available throughout the night, along with games, drawings, and prizes. The activities and prize opportunities vary from year to year, but the prizes are generally geared toward helping students as they begin this next stage of their lives. Past prizes have included gift cards, gas cards, and fast-food cards, as well as larger items such as mini refrigerators, tool kits, and televisions.
The celebration continues into the early morning hours, ending with parents signing their students out and safely driving them home.
