Broadwater County Commission approves mutual aid pact with Gallatin County, hears public outcry over solid waste and roads.

The Broadwater County Commission opened its Monday morning meeting with a unanimous vote to approve a mutual aid agreement with the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office — a deal that will give both agencies cross-jurisdictional authority in the Three Forks area and lay the groundwork for a newly hired resident deputy set to begin work June 24.

A Broadwater County Sheriff's Office official told commissioners the agreement will allow deputies from both counties to patrol each other's jurisdictions and take arrests, with the other agency filing supplemental reports. The arrangement is especially significant for the county's southern corridor, where the new resident deputy — whose name was not released pending his start date — will be based.

"It'll definitely help a lot," the official said, noting the pact would improve police presence and response times in an area that has historically relied on longer backup travel. Gallatin County commissioners were expected to take up the agreement at their June 16 meeting, at which point it would take effect.

Other business:

In other action, commissioners approved a task order amendment for a state-funded mental health crisis diversion grant, as presented by Public Health Director Ruby Taylor. The amendment updated contract language and personnel contacts through the grant's June 30, 2027, end date.

Commissioners also approved a Capital Improvement Plan project description for the Townsend Airport, a non-binding document required by the FAA that outlines potential airport projects through 2032. The board concluded the meeting by approving $272,531.82 in payroll claims.

The commission noted there will be no regular Wednesday meeting this week due to a scheduling conflict.
