It was a cold, gray day to run a race, but the sun came out just as runners were finishing the race at the second annual Radersburg Ramble. Organizer Karen Walton said she was pleased that ten more runners than last year came out, even though the weather was about the same–– 8 degrees above zero.
Forty-four people from White Sulphur, Manhattan, Boulder, Helena, Bozeman, Townsend and Three Forks signed up to run the 5K and 10K run, which began at historic Radersburg School in the tiny neighborhood eleven miles from the Missouri River Bridge and Highway 287 turnoff.
Tara Spotts and her son, Michael, ran the race together. Michael is 9 and in the fourth grade in Manhattan. Tara said he had been running since he was born, beginning in a baby stroller. They both have done the Santa Run in Manhattan. Michael tries to do one 5K run each month.
High school cross country runner Elaine MacDonald did the 5K in 29 minutes with her dog, Charley. The six-year-old English labrador runs with her often, Elaine said.
All proceeds from the run go to Radersburg Historical Preservation, Inc., since the run is hosted in the building. Volunteers supplied the runners with an array of hot homemade soups, breads and desserts. “I try to keep the price of the run reasonable at $35 for the 5K and $45 for the 10K so we can attract families. Some runs have entry fees of up to $150 per person,” Walton explained.
Walton thanked donors and sponsors for the run, including Belgrade ACE Hardware, Murdocks, Rocky Mountain Supply, Bob’s Supermarket, Townsend Drug, Deep Creek Pizza, Fishtail Tavern, Bunkhouse Bar, Little Creek Feeds, JR Tonjum and Joselyn Reynolds, Realtors.
Walton’s mother, Jayne Mays, helped with setting up the food. Jayne, who lives in Belgrade, commented that runners and walkers who love the sport need a winter event to keep them interested and in shape.
