Lions’ Club Annual Perch Derby was canceled January 26 due to poor ice conditions, according to derby director Kim Kondelik. “The ice was just beginning to improve during this last cold spell, with a 7-inch depth in some places. The temperature is supposed to go to 30 degrees later this week, which will not thicken the ice more, so we made the decision to cancel this year’s derby. We are so disappointed,” she said.
The classic Townsend event, originally hosted by Townsend Rotary, was taken over by the Lions’ Club some years ago. Originally led by Mike Colbert, Kondelik filled in for a few years, then began leading the large event in 2022.
Three teams had signed up for the derby, Kondelik said. She will refund their money. The Derby has been canceled only twice during her time as organizer. As she remembers, the weather prohibited holding the event in 2019 and 2020.
