Broadwater County, MT — The Broadwater County Commission has been notified by Montana Local Government Services, within the Department of Administration, that certain state funds are being withheld due to unresolved cash reconciliation issues.
According to the State, the withheld funds result from accounting discrepancies that have not been fully reconciled or corrected. Under Montana law, the County Treasurer is required to balance individual accounts monthly and report those balances. Simply put, these accounts are out of balance. However, please know the following:
Broadwater County is working diligently to comply with the financial requirements to balance the funds. To address the errors, we have enlisted third-party financial guidance and are revising reconciliation practices. To be clear, there is no allegation of misappropriation or criminal activity. Accounting practices needed to be updated, and the renewed efforts are yielding improved fiscal accountability. County services will not be impacted with a timely resolution.
The Commissioners and other county officials are assisting the Treasurer to resolve these issues. This includes revising the processes required between elected offices to ensure proficient financial management. Our residents deserve clear answers and responsible stewardship of public funds. We will continue to speak up, insist on accountability, and do everything within our authority to protect the financial health of Broadwater County.
This matter is scheduled for discussion at the Jan 28th and Feb 4th Commission meetings. Staff and elected officials will be in attendance and available for questions on this issue.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
