Reinstating a School Resource Officer

Student safety is a responsibility we all share, and it is one that the PTA takes seriously. As parents, volunteers, and community members, our goal is simple: to support our schools and help create an environment where children can learn, grow, and feel safe.

Reinstating a School Resource Officer (SRO) has become a key priority for the Townsend PTA. This is not a reaction to any single event. It is a thoughtful, proactive step in caring for our children. Parents want peace of mind knowing that when they drop their kids off at school each morning, safety is being taken seriously.

Having a School Resource Officer on campus enhances safety by providing immediate emergency response, helping deter unsafe behavior, and supporting crisis management. Beyond safety, SROs build relationships with students, serve as mentors, support staff, and help educate students about responsibility and decision-making. Their presence also strengthens connections between schools, families, and the broader community.

When Townsend previously had an SRO, the impact went far beyond emergency response. The officer became a familiar and trusted presence, someone who knew the students, built relationships, and supported teachers and staff. Those everyday connections matter. Students learned accountability, respect, and that law enforcement can be approachable and supportive.

We recognize that funding an SRO is a challenge. School budgets are tight, and this is not something the district can address alone. That is why the PTA believes collaboration is essential. The school board, school administration, Sheriff’s Office, county commissioners, and community members all have a role in exploring solutions, whether through grants, shared funding, or other creative approaches. The PTA is ready to help lead this effort.

This is just one of the many ways the PTA supports our schools, and getting involved, even in small ways, makes a real difference for our children.

If you care about the direction of our schools and want to be part of positive, solutions-focused conversations, we invite you to join the PTA and get involved. More information about the PTA and how to participate can be found at https://www.townsendpta.org. Together, we can continue working to ensure Townsend schools remain safe, welcoming places for all students.
