Advent Season Brings Words of Wisdom

Every year during Advent, I like to read something that is not fiction or history but of the soul. I picked up the book “The Forgotten Way” by Matthew Kelly. In there was what I thought pertained to today's world. We all trip up in many ways: someone who does not trip up in speech has reached perfection. Once we put a bit in the horse's mouth, we have the whole animal under our control.

The tongue is only a tiny body part, but its boasts are great. Think how a small flame can set fire to a huge forest. The tongue is a flame too among all parts of the body. The tongue is a whole wicked world. It infects the whole body. Catching fire itself from hell, it sets fire to the whole wheel of creation. We use it to bless the Lord and Father, but we also use it to curse people who are made in God's image. The blessed and cursed words come out of the same mouth. My brothers, this must be wrong: does any water supply give a flow of fresh water and salt water out of the same pipe? Can a fig tree yield olives?

Author Kelly explains blaming others or telling them how evil some people are also grows. Our ability to speak is so powerful that we should have profound respect for it and perhaps even fear it a little. When we are mindful of how powerful the gift of speech is we are more likely to use it in positive ways. When we are not mindful, it’s the equivalent of turning on a chainsaw and putting it into the hands of the toddler, reckless and irresponsible. All taken out of “The Forgotten Way“ by Matthew Kelly.
