Broadwater County adopted the first-ever codified assessment schedule for business solid waste fees during its May 28 meeting.

“The Solid Waste Advisory Board has been working on this for eight months,” County Public Works Director TJ Graveley told the commission. “What they’re trying to do is clarify and classify the business assessments so far as how many each one will get and make it fair for everyone.” The measure is hoped to keep solid waste fees at their current rates per assessment, he added.

Graveley explained that the county has not had an assessment schedule written in policy before. “But it’s very important for us to make it clear for everyone moving forward, so there’s no discrepancy moving forward.”

Commissioner Debi Randolph noted that the Solid Waste Department is run through an enterprise fund and can not take money from or give money to the county’s general fund budget.

No public comment was received by the Public Works Department prior to the May 28 public hearing or during the public hearing itself. Businesses that feel they are being overcharged can appeal their assessment through the Solid Waste Advisory Board.

A copy of the fee schedule is available on the county’s website. Questions can be directed to the Broadwater County Public Works Department.
