With Montana springtime literally in full bloom, it is easy to forget wildfire season will soon be upon us. Please refer to the reference picture from Broadwater County Department of Emergency Services for recommended ideas for fireproofing your home and its surrounding area. This is especially pertinent for all landowners at risk of damage from wildfire.
Keeping water and fire prevention tools on hand and accessible is strongly recommended due to the unpredictable nature of wildfires and the conditions from which they are fueled. Water hoses should be stored next to your home and any additional structures when possible. Avoid outside burning during Red Flag warnings. Mow grass within 100 feet and remove flammable materials from under and around structures. Wood piles should be at least 30ft from structures and fuel tanks, and debris cleared from roofs. Driveways should be kept accessible for fire personnel.
Warnings come from the State and the local Fire Departments and can be found online at https://www.des.mt.gov Broadwater Rural Fire Chief, Ed Shindoll can be reached at 406-266-5535.
