May 16 began a two-week-long memorial walk honoring Broadwater County Deputy Mason Moore, who was killed in the line of duty 8 years ago near Three Forks. The workout event took place at V42 Gym on Front Street this past Friday. His wife, Jodi, and some of their children attended the event where Coach Judy Siler put around twenty bodies through their paces in a high-energy workout with their chosen weights. Calling them “hero workouts,” Judy emphasized the pace was intended to be hard, just as losing a loved one is hard: “It is our way to honor their lives and their sacrifice.”
Kids, then adults, climbed a rope to the ceiling of the wrestling practice room, then ran or jogged to the 45 miles-per-hour sign toward Indian Creek Campground and back. They returned to do situps, squats and rope climbing for the duration of the hour. Those who finished the event retired to Canyon Ferry Brewing for beer, pop and popcorn.
Organized by Mason Moore Foundation board members, including Kira Gifford, who owns V42 Gym, the event encourages participants to walk or run 43.8 miles during the month. Deputy Moore’s badge number was 438, so the number of miles acknowledges his service.
