BCHS Horticulture Class Students Plant Trees on Campus

The Broadwater County High School (BCHS) Horticulture Class planted two new trees on the school campus last week.

The horticulture class is being taught by Jemma Loughery. Patrick Plantenberg, Chair of the Townsend Tree Board; owner of Plants, Etc., a local landscaping company; and Chair of the Montana Urban and Community Forestry Association is helping teach the students about potential green industry jobs.

The students have been taught how to prune trees properly and how to plant trees properly. Plantenberg has observed in his travels across the state that 75% of the trees planted are planted too deep. The first root must be on the soil surface. Roots need oxygen. Many times, the plants are planted too deep in the pots or in the root ball of ball and burlap trees.

The trees being planted are replacing the many memorial trees that were lost when the new elementary school was constructed.
