The annual ‘Small Schools’ Track and Field meet was held at Helena Middle School. Last week. Broadwater, East Helena, Helena High, Helena Capital, and Jefferson attended. This meet is known as the funniest meet throughout the season as students are encouraged to compete in events that aren’t in their normal routine. Throwers are seen running the 4 x 100 m relay race and sprinters are doing high jump. This is also senior day. The BHS track team has seven seniors. Nolan Flynn, Cael Sell, Memphys Meier, Kaelyn Sangray, Kaycee White, Abby Wickens, and Jazlyn Martin attended their last season of high school track.
Kaelyn will be attending MSU-Billings for cross country and track. She looks forward to continuing her passion for running in this next chapter of her life. She has been working hard before and during her season to perform at her best. Kaelyn usually runs long distances; However, that didn’t stop her from running a 4 x 100 m race in Helena. She ran with the other distance girls, Abby Wickens, Memphys Meier, and Kyla Meissner. She consistently runs the 1600 m, or the 2 mile, with a time of 12 minutes and 31.6 seconds. She also runs the mile with a time of 5 minutes and 57 seconds. This year she hopes to qualify for state in the 2 mile. Kaelyn found her passion for running in middle school. She said, "Running is something I have grown up with and it is something that brings me joy."
First-year track runner Cael Sell is another senior on the team. His time is a 12.04 second 100 m dash, which he performed at the Gallatin Valley Invitational meet. He also regularly competes in the 200 m, Long Jump, and Triple Jump. His Triple Jump distance is a 37’ 5.5’ which he received at the Manhattan Christian Invitational. Sell competed in the high jump for the first time ever. He only practiced the week before and was able to place seventh out of the seventeen who competed. Cael said, "I've enjoyed doing track my senior year, it has really helped me athletically and also is a good way to spend time with my friends. The small schools meet was especially fun because it was very laid back and not stressful.”
It was a great meet, full of laughs and last chances to get memories with the graduating seniors. They look forward to the last month of the season and are all working hard to achieve new times and compete at the best of their ability for Districts. Districts will be held in Belgrade on Thursday, May 8. Those who qualify will go to Divisionals and then to State. The season has gone by quickly and the times and distances are improving for the athletes.
