Adam Brakefield Candidate for Townsend School District Board
MT43 News Staff Reporter
Adam Brakefield, age 49, is running for the open seat on the Townsend School District Board. Brakefield works as maintenance supervisor at Graymont Western Lime Plant. He is a 1994 graduate of Broadwater High School and he and his wife Angie have five children, four of whom currently attend Townsend Schools. He has an Associate Degree in applied studies.
Brakefield has always had an interest in the schools’ direction: “I would like to be a reasonable voice and advocate for principals that give kids long term success in their lives.”
As a candidate for the position, he specifically wants to support the administration by advocating new programming and grant writing. He is in favor of giving students college credits for advanced studies in high school. He also very much supports students entering the applied trades. “There are lots of careers in the trades that would keep the students in Montana jobs. Our part is to work with businesses to bring those jobs to Montana for our kids,” he said.
He said Townsend Schools should provide good educational opportunities for students with disabilities. “It's part of taking care of our own,” he explained.
If elected, he would hope to encourage more opportunities in the fine arts program. He emphasized the skills students learn in speech and drama and in music competitions carry into adulthood.
Brakefield had advocated before the School Board for allowing eighth graders to participate in all high school sports except football. Although the administration favored the proposal, and Montana High School Association passed the policy in 2021, the current school board did not vote in favor. “I feel it leaves our sports program missing a lot of opportunities to jumpstart our participating students in the sports program. Not allowing eighth grade participation also limits upperclassmen leadership practice.” He suggested.
He is invested in the community. He has been involved with the wrestling program for kids and he especially enjoys the vibrant hunting, fishing and outdoor activities the area offers.
